  April 11 Spelman College opened in Atlanta, GA, on this date in 1881. Spelman was the first institution of higher learning for Black women. Percy Lavon Julian, chemist who held 138 patents and helped create drugs for treating arthritis and glaucoma [cortisone and physostigmine, (1935)] and Aero Foam, used to put out gas/oil fires
