Today in Black History: Joseph Hayne Rainey

June 21Joseph Hayne Rainey, the first Black to be sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives, was born in Georgetown, SC, on this date in 1832. Born into slavery, he was freed in the 1840s when his father purchased the freedom of his entire family. Revels and Rainey were both elected on the Republican ticket. After
