Today in Black History: George Boyer Vashon

George Boyer Vashon, the first Black to receive a Bachelor’s Degree from Oberlin College, became the first Black lawyer in the state of New York on this date in 1848. At the age of 16, Vashon enrolled in Oberlin Collegiate Institute in Ohio.  On August 28, 1844, Vashon earned his Bachelor of Arts degree with

Last Goodbye to Amiri Baraka (1934-2014)

The people have lost another seminal voice. Amiri Baraka was an American writer, his work included poetry, drama, fiction, essays, and movie reviews. His poem about the 9/11 attacks “Somebody Blew Up America?” generated controversy around this author. His death, at Beth Israel Medical Center, was confirmed by his son Ras Baraka.
