Over the last five years, there has been only one American military serviceman still held hostage in Afghanistan by the Taliban. Last Saturday, May 31, 2014, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was rescued by the U.S. Special Operations Forces alive and relatively well through an exchange with some Taliban members being held at “Gitmo” in Cuba. The release and exchange was facilitated through diplomatic means and in conjunction with one of the US allies in the Middle East, Qatar.
Of course, instead of celebrating the release of an American from the Taliban, many Republicans, including Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and John McCain (R-AZ), immediately called Sgt. Bergdahl a “traitor” and accused President Barack Obama of “palling around with terrorists”.
The detainees who were released in the exchange were scheduled for release seven months from now anyway…they were just released earlier than planned, and we got our American soldier back.
As usual, there is a separate standard for this POTUS, because former President Ronald Reagan not only hosted the Taliban at the White House, but referred to them as the “Founding Fathers” of their country. He also authorized sales of weapons to these “Freedom Fighters”, including Osama bin Laden, which were later used in real terrorists attacks against Americans.
But for the Republicans, whatever Reagan does is right, and whatever Obama does is wrong.
