Tiananmen Square 1989 and Ferguson MO 2014

Tiananmen Square in Beijing China and Main Street in Ferguson USA

I am sure that I am not the first to see the uncanny resemblance of these two iconic photos captured by ordinary people with a camera (or an iPhone).

The 3 year old little boy decided to cross the street ahead of the Ferguson Protest March when his grandmother told him to stop and wait for her. Someone on the sidelines (@KoranAddo) took this picture with the iPhone. I am sure it will win an award soon. The protestors in Ferguson were demonstrating against police officers in 2014, armed with assault rifles and tanks who have been indiscriminately attacking innocent people angry about the unwarranted death of Michael Brown and other innocent Black young men.

The 1989 crackdown that initiated on June 3–4 became known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre or the June 4 Massacre as troops with assault rifles and tanks inflicted casualties on unarmed civilians trying to block the military’s advance towards Tiananmen Square in the heart of Beijing, which student and other demonstrators had occupied for seven weeks.

These two photos are not the only evidence of the analogy between two countries and two decades of unchecked police brutality.
